Overview
Dentists often clean teeth up to the gum line during routine dental exams. In deep scaling, a dentist cleans the pockets between the teeth and gums that occur when inflammation is present by removing plaque and tartar from the teeth below the gum line. There is a gentle pushback of the gum tissue. In order to remove inflammatory agents including calculus, bacteria, and toxins and to promote reattachment to the gums, dentists use a treatment known as root planing. Deep scaling and root planing is a treatment method for periodontitis, or gum disease, with the ultimate objective of putting the condition into remission. Deep scaling and root planing are particularly successful non-surgical methods for treating gum disease, according to studies.
About Treatment
What happens in Deep Scaling?
The Dentist provides a local anaesthetic to the treatment sites before beginning the process. This means that during the process, you will be awake and will only experience pressure and minor discomfort. Deep cleaning involves gum scaling and root planing Deep cleanings usually take place over two or more visits and involve gum scaling and root planing. Each visit can take 1 to 2 hours. The tooth scaling appointment is when your dentist removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline. During the root planing visit, your dentist removes plaque and tarter that forms on the roots of your teeth. This helps reduce the size of the space between your teeth and gums, helping your gums reattach to the teeth. Two steps comprise the thorough cleaning. Your dentist will first scale your teeth with either an ultrasonic equipment or a manual tool like a periodontal scaler or curette. Plaque and tartar from both above and below the gum line are removed during this scaling. After that, your dentist will undertake root planing to aid in the reattachment of your gums to your teeth.
Advantages of Deep Scaling
Benefits of a thorough cleaning, if your dentist suggests one, include: halting the spread of gum disease. treating an existing illness and fostering recovery brushing your teeth from the gum line down removing gum disease-related foul breath preserving the teeth's roots
Disadvantages of Deep Scaling
Deep cleaning poses hazards even if it can alleviate gum disease. The following are drawbacks of thoroughly cleaning your teeth: causes nerve damage, doesn't ensure that your gums will reattach to your teeth, may cause your gums to recede, and can cause discomfort and sensitivity if you have a weak immune system. The most frequent adverse effects include discomfort and sensitivity. Deep cleaning risks are typically minor and only last for around 5 to 7 days, however in extreme circumstances they may linger for many weeks.
What can I expect after Deep Scaling?
Like with any dental operation, you can have some tooth sensitivity and perhaps little discomfort for a few days following the procedure. Your gums may also feel painful as a result of the work done on them. Additionally, it's normal for your gums to bleed a little bit. However, if the bleeding persists or feels severe, get in touch with us immediately soon. Depending on your situation, we'll either suggest an antibiotic rinse or a saltwater rinse to relieve sore gums and prevent infection. In some cases, we may also place antibiotics right within the freshly cleaned gum pockets. Sometimes gum disease has progressed to the point where two treatments are necessary. Regardless, you will need to return for a follow-up appointment once the scaling is finished so that we may assess how your gums have recovered and gauge the depth of your pockets to ensure that the gum tissue has effectively reattached to the planed roots. Keep in mind that maintaining good dental health contributes to overall wellness.
Before After
To achieve a speedy recovery following a deep cleaning, remember this advice: Eat nothing till the numbness in your mouth has subsided. It might be tempting to have breakfast or lunch right away after leaving the dentist's office because many people don't eat before their dental appointments. However, it's crucial to wait until you can feel every area of your mouth again after an anesthetic-related operation before eating. This is due to the possibility that while under anaesthesia, biting might harm your gums and prevent the healing process from taking place without you being aware of it. Don't eat certain things after a deep clean. After a deep cleaning, it is advised to avoid specific meals since your gums and teeth will be sensitive and healing. Following surgery, avoid eating the following items to prevent potential healing delays: foods with acidity such as oranges and tomatoes Discreet meals like steaks or big burgers foods like almonds or popcorn that include microscopic particles that might irritate the gums For pain and swelling, over-the-counter medications can be utilised. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen, Advil, or Tylenol to relieve gum discomfort or swelling. Follow the directions on the bottle carefully, and don't go beyond the suggested dosages. Use antibiotics as directed In some circumstances, we could recommend an antibiotic to stop an illness. Make sure to take these pills as directed and until you have finished all of them. There may be some swelling or pain. Your teeth may feel more sensitive than normal after a comprehensive cleaning. This could last for a few weeks. There's a chance that you'll also get a little edoema or bruising. This can be helped by applying ice to the region, but if you notice any significant swelling, let us know. Small bleeding is also typical. You could notice that your saliva has a rosy colour after the operation. It can happen up to 48 hours after the surgery and is a sign of minimal bleeding. During the first 24 hours, stay away from spicy meals and avoid rinsing your mouth since doing so might encourage more bleeding. Please get in touch with us if bleeding persists after the first 48 hours if you need help. Using saltwater, rinse After the first 24 hours following your treatment, saltwater should be used to rinse your moth 4-6 times per day. This can assist in keeping the region germ- and infection-free.
